Karthik's Bore Climb

Every payment that lands moves the whole team a little higher up the mountain, and the next well is the next peak.

Who this is for

Karthik drills borewells around Krishnagiri. One rig, one lorry, a driver called Selvam, a helper called Mani, and his younger brother Anand who takes the calls. Six or seven wells a month across the villages. The moment this software lands is a Tuesday afternoon at a groundnut field, when a farmer's son sends eighteen thousand by UPI while the rig is still turning, and Karthik has no way to tell anyone what that money just finished.

How the job is done today

Karthik keeps a small notebook wedged above the jeep's dashboard. One page per farmer. Village name, feet quoted, rate, advance taken. Money comes in three or four pieces, some cash at the field, some UPI at night, some after the harvest. He pencils it in when he remembers, and sometimes he does not. Anand rings him to ask whether Perumal has cleared his balance, and Karthik has to stop the rig and find the page. At night his wife asks how much is still outside. He says roughly. Nobody except him has ever seen the notebook.

The screens, in order

1. Start the climb — Karthik makes his team once, names it, and gets a short code he can send to Anand, Selvam and Mani.
2. New well — This is where a job begins: Karthik enters the village, whose land it is, the feet and the amount he quoted, and any advance that came, and that well becomes the next mountain.
3. The mountain — Shows the well being drilled now as a peak, with the team standing at whatever height the money collected so far has taken them.
4. Money came in — Karthik taps the well, puts in what arrived and whether it was cash or UPI, and watches everyone move up.
5. What is still outside — Karthik's own page listing each well and the balance left on it, so he knows who to ring before the harvest ends.
6. Top reached — When the last rupee of a well comes in, the team sees the peak reached with their names on it, and the next well is waiting below.

What it keeps track of

• Wells — which village, whose land, how many feet quoted, amount quoted, advance taken, started on which day, finished or still going
• Money that came — which well, how much, cash or UPI, which day, who entered it
• The team — name, the code they joined with, which day they joined

The one decision that matters

Do Selvam and Mani see the rupees, or only the climb. One way, everyone sees every amount, including what each farmer still owes. The other way, the team sees each payment as it lands and the height it adds, but the list of who is still holding money stays with Karthik alone. Go with the second. Karthik will not put his farmers' balances on his helper's phone, and if he thinks he might have to, he will stop entering things honestly. The pleasure here is in the arrival of money, not the chasing of it. A climb that everyone enjoys stays open. A debt list that everyone sees quietly becomes a thing nobody wants to look at.

What to leave out of the first version

Leave out diesel, casing pipe rates, driver wages and anything that works out profit. Leave out reminders to farmers. The moment this app starts telling Karthik what he actually earned per well, it becomes accounts, and accounts are the thing he has been avoiding for eleven years. He should open this because the mountain moved, not because a figure needs checking.

How you would know it worked

A farmer sends money at nine in the night. Karthik enters it from the field. Before he can ring anyone, Mani sends a message in the family WhatsApp group saying they have crossed halfway on the Bagalur well.

Then show that well as a mountain where the top is the full quoted amount. Give me another screen to put in money the moment it arrives, cash or UPI, and the mountain should climb by that much. My brother, my driver and my helper join from their own phones using a short code I send them, and they see the climb move when I enter money. Keep the list of what is still owed on my phone only. When a well is fully paid, show the top reached with everyone's names, and put the next well below it.
